Shopping for your first wake boat? Welcome to one of the most fun decisions you’ll ever make!
Like any specialized piece of equipment, wake boats come with their own terminology. Surf systems, ballast setups, hull designs, tower options, engine specs. It can feel like a lot at first.
The good news is that once you understand the core features that truly shape the boat and the ride it produces, everything starts to make sense. In this guide, we break down the essential wake boat features you’ll see across the industry, what they actually do, and how they impact your time on the water. We’ll also explain how Axis approaches these features and why that matters for riders and families alike.
WHAT MAKES A WAKE BOAT DIFFERENT?

Wake boats are purpose-built for one thing: creating wakes and surfable waves for watersports.
That makes them fundamentally different from traditional ski boats, which are designed to minimize wake in order to give slalom skiers a flatter surface.
From hull shape to weight distribution and onboard systems, wake boats are engineered to displace water in very specific ways. The goal is a customizable, steep wake with a long, clean pocket that riders can use to boost airs or surf without the rope. That intentional displacement is what separates wake boats from other towboats and drives nearly every design decision you’ll see.
While all wake boats vary, there are certain core features or design characteristics you can expect to see in most of them. Here's a quick list of all of them with explanations of what they are, and what Axis boats can offer you in each.
SURF SYSTEMS: THE GAME-CHANGER

Modern wake boats rely on surf systems to shape and clean up the wave behind the boat. While early setups depended heavily on shifting ballast weight to one side, today’s systems use hardware and software to redirect water flow with far greater precision.
Not all surf systems are created equal. Some rely solely on tabs or plates. Others combine gates, ballast, and hull design to create a more consistent, repeatable wave.
Axis boats feature Malibu’s patented Surf Gate™ system, which uses hydraulic gates on either side of the hull to redirect water flow and form a clean surf wave. Because the system is integrated into the boat’s design, riders can switch from port to starboard in seconds without moving ballast or passengers.
To sweeten the deal with an Axis even further, you will receive an exclusive Surf Band. Surf Band is a waterproof, wrist-worn controller that allows your rider to make instant adjustments to Surf Gate (allowing the rider to switch sides at will), as well as to adjust the boat's music volume, and to incrementally adjust the boat's speed up and down.
For beginners, this consistency matters. A repeatable wave builds confidence. For experienced riders, it means dialing in the exact shape and push they want without trial and error.
BALLAST SYSTEMS: THE WEIGHT BEHIND THE WAKE
Ballast is one of the most important elements of any wake boat. Simply put, ballast adds weight to increase water displacement and enlarge the wake.
Across the industry, ballast systems may include hard tanks built into the hull, plug-and-play bags, or a combination of both. Some boats require manual setup and additional bags, while others integrate factory-installed systems that can be filled and drained at the push of a button.
The advantage of a factory-engineered system is predictability. You know how the boat will respond, rider after rider, without relying on aftermarket add-ons.
POWER WEDGE® III: ADD INSTANT BALLAST
Power Wedge® III is a patented hydrofoil system located at the back of every Axis boat. It's a crucial part of the Axis Surf system.
At the press of a button, Power Wedge drags down from behind your Axis boat. This instantly adds extra ballast to your boat, which it achieves by 'pulling' the hull down into the water.
With Power Wedge III on your boat, you don't need to reset all of your boat's surf systems for every rider. You've got a grom who's just stating out or wants a smaller wave? Set the wedge to Lift or 1. Looking for maximum amplitude? Set the wedge to 3 or 4 and let the rider send it. Power Wedge III is power, customization, and versatility without the hassle.
HULL DESIGN: THE FOUNDATION OF YOUR RIDE
All the systems in the world won't matter if the hull design isn't right. For that reason, wake surfing boats are generally designed with a hull that maximizes the wake the boat creates.
Axis boats offer one of the first-ever wake-specific hulls with our patented Wake Plus™ Hull. This is a hull design specifically engineered to sit deep in the water to create displacement while maintaining a stable, predictable platform even when you're loaded down with ballast.
The Wake Plus Hull design excels in three key areas:
1. Displaces water more efficiently than standard hulls, allowing you to create clean, scalable wakes and waves without needing impossible amounts of extra weight.
2. Provides unmatched tracking. Thanks to precision-placed tracking fins, the boat stays locked on its line, making it easy for the captain to maintain consistent speed and direction even when a rider is cutting hard.
3. Delivers a balanced, level ride. By distributing weight and volume across the hull, Axis ensures the boat doesn't "bow-rise" excessively, keeping your sightlines clear and the ride predictable.
For beginner captains, this stability translates directly to confidence. You're learning to drive, spot riders, and navigate busy lake traffic. You need a boat that goes exactly where you point it.
TOWERS & THE RIDER'S EXPERIENCE

Wake boat towers definitely look cool, but they aren’t just there for aesthetic reasons. They provide higher tow points for riders, storage space for boards, and mounting options for speakers and racks.
Some boats offer manually-operated towers, others have powered folding towers for easier storage. The right choice depends on your garage clearance, usage patterns, and preference for convenience.
Axis Boats come standard with our AW26 tower, which is built in-house by Axis, ensuring total quality control and attention to detail on every boat. You can choose from one of three base colors for your tower and one of twelve accent colors to add some of your personal flair. Add one of several pairs of PTM board racks to give you lots of secure board storage on the tower. And finally, you can add optional Wet Sounds speakers to give you the perfect soundtrack to your ride. The tower can even be optioned with a Bimini top to keep the sun off you on those extra hot days.
PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER

Now that you understand how all of these components work in harmony, choosing a wake boat becomes less about comparing spec sheets and more about choosing the quality of the ride you can look forward to. When you choose an Axis boat, you have the peace of mind that you aren't fighting aftermarket settings or mismatched gear. Instead, everything is factory-integrated and designed to be plug-and-play from the moment you hit the water.
